A Yucky Commedia Love Story?!
by
Andrew Preston
Fall '14 brought students The Actors Project's second play done in the stylings of the Commedia dell'Arte. The Commedia dell'Arte is a style of theatre that was developed during the 16th century. It is known for it's masked stock characters and originating the word 'slapstick'. A Yucky Commedia Love Story allows students to see some history of how theatre was done in the past and introduce them to a style of theatre that is rarely seen, especially by younger audiences. The Commedia dell'Arte performances usually contained the same simple plot involving an overly dramatic inamorati (a young couple in love) together and this play doesn't stear away from this classic premise. Helpful friends try to outsmart greedy villains in this story about frienship, greed and doing what is right. A Yucky Commedia Love Story moreover allows students see the company perform in classic Commedia dell'Arte masks!
